Robin Wright has been in Hollywood long enough to have seen and experienced some really fucked up things. At a talk for Women in Motion at Cannes Film Festival this week, she shared one of them: the most sexist thing she’s experienced in her career. Now is a good time for that deep breath, fam. Maybe several of them. Brace yourselves.

“I was 17 and in Paris, and I went in for a go-see,” Wright remembered. “The director said, ‘I liked the other one’s [breasts] better.’ That was during the audition. I didn’t get the job.”

Ugh. Ugh.

Regardless of that experience, though, Wright is holding onto hope that the industry is getting better for women.

“I think it’s just a matter of time and breaking an old school of thought, opening up perspective,” she said.

She also explained why she shies away from the word “feminism” a little bit, but still supports the cause wholeheartedly.

“Feminism today has become such a derogatory, diva-like word,” she said. “Feminism means equality. Equal work, equal pay.”

Can we get an amen?

Before the event was over, Wright was asked to impart some of her wisdom on women who look to her for advice and inspiration. Here’s what she had to say: “You don’t have to yell. You can just stand your ground, speak your truth and amplify your voice in that way. We don’t want to be treated with more disparity, just join forces.”
